3D Printing

Challenges Facing 3D Printing

The difficulties of 3D Printing include hard extrusion, tendency to collapse, weak inter-layer adhesion, difficult-to-control setting time, and poor printing stability. Each of these issues is a key factor determining the final quality and can cause many adverse effects.

  • Printing failures lead to material waste and increased costs.
  • The strength is unstable, and the product is not up to standard.
  • The project was delayed, preventing large-scale production.

Celotech can provide the necessary materials, such as hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl starch, calcium formate, and superplasticizers, to address these issues.

Celotech 3D Printing Solutions

In practical 3D printing, no single additive can solve all challenges. Stable and reliable performance depends on balancing several key factors:

1. Extrudability vs. Shape Retention

  • Too much flow → easy to extrude but collapses
  • Too thick → stands upright but hard to extrude

2. Adhesion vs. Structural Stress

  • Weak interlayer adhesion → low strength
  • Too stiff → prone to cracking or delamination

3. Setting Time vs. Printing Pace

  • Sets too fast → printing interrupted
  • Sets too slow → poor support, deforms easily

Note: The same formula may produce different results under different conditions.

Function Role Available products Recommended Model
Water retention & rheology control Improve extrusion consistency and prevent rapid water loss Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose Celopro® MK400 FP / Celopro®MK6M FP
Structural support & adhesion Enhance layer bonding and reduce collapse Hydroxypropyl starch Stargel® ST600
Flow optimization Improve material flow and reduce equipment stress Superplasticizer Ultraplast®PC10/Ultraplast®PC16
Accelerated hydration Speed up cement hydration and enhance green strength Calcium Formate Quickset®S98

Formulation Usage Logic

1. Celopro® (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose)

  • Provides stable rheology and water retention, forming the foundation of the systemStargel® ST600 (Starch Ether)
  • Provides early structural strength to support shaping

2. Ultraplast® (Superplasticizer)

  • Improves flow, ensuring smoother and more stable extrusion

3. Calcium Formate

  • Accelerates cement hydration, enhancing green strength and early set

Together, these four components work synergistically to achieve continuous and stable 3D printing, rather than solving just a single issue.

Solution Advantages and Application Recommendations

Solution Advantages

When the material system is balanced, the following are typically observed, leading to several production benefits:

  • Smoother and more stable extrusion.
  • Clearer formed structures and reduced collapse.
  • Stronger interlayer bonding.
  • Reduced printing process fluctuations.
  • The strength of the finished product is more consistent.

In actual production, these advantages usually translate into less material waste, more stable product quality, and higher production efficiency.

Applications

  • For large-size or structural component printing: Increase the Celopro® MK6M proportion to enhance material support, add Stargel® to improve initial structural strength, and control printing speed to prevent structural collapse.
  • In high-temperature drying environments: Rapid moisture loss and easy cracking. Adding Celopro® MK400 improves water retention, reducing printing speed to alleviate drying stress, and avoiding prolonged continuous printing to maintain material uniformity.
  • In high-humidity environments: Slow drying and sticky surface. Control overall water usage to prevent over-wetting, optimize the Ultraplast® proportion to improve flowability, and improve ventilation to accelerate surface drying.
