Completion, Workover and Stimulation Fluids (Fracturing)

Completion, Workover and Stimulation Fluids (Fracturing) Technology

During the fracturing process, the fracturing fluid injected into the well can be divided into:

  1. Pre-fluid: expand the cracks and cool the formation. In the oil and gas layer with higher temperature, it can also play a cooling role
  2. Sand-carrying fluid: transport a certain concentration of proppant (ceramsite or quartz sand) to the predetermined position in the crack according to the designed concentration
  3. Displacement fluid: displace the sand-carrying fluid in the ground manifold and wellbore into the crack.

Hydroxyethyl cellulose has better salt solubility and is an excellent water-based fracturing fluid.

Celotech Solution

Water-based fluids often face multiple challenges in hydraulic fracturing operations. We understand your problems and analyze the root causes as follows:

  • Unstable Rheology: high temperature, shear, and salinity reduce viscosity, so the pressure and fracture growth are affected.
  • Proppant Settling: sand or ceramic particles may sink unevenly, lowering fracture conductivity.
  • Excessive Fluid Loss: fluids may leak into formations, causing poor fracture filling.
  • Equipment Wear: high-pressure flow will increase friction and wear on pumps and tools.
  • Environmental Concerns: traditional chemicals may not degrade well, raising environmental issues.

Targeted Celopro® HEC Approaches

Taking the above challenges into account, Celotech developed specialized HEC solutions for you.  Simultaneously, we also support tailored solutions for specific needs.

Thickening and Rheology Control: HEC can be used as a thickener to increase the viscosity of the fracturing fluid, allowing it to transmit pressure more effectively under high pressure. Celopro®HE helps reduce friction and wear, thereby extending the life of down-hole equipment.

Fluid Loss Reduction: Hydroxyethyl cellulose ether provides excellent fluid loss control, forming a filter cake on fracture surfaces that reduces fluid leak-off, protects the formation, and enhances fracturing efficiency.

Recommend grade: Celopro®HE100,000S

Stability: HEC is highly temperature and salinity-resistant, so it can retain the rheological properties of fracturing fluids in high-temperature, high-salinity environments. It is essential for challenging downhole conditions.

Proppant Suspension: HEC helps suspend proppants such as quartz sand and ceramic particles within the fracturing fluid by raising fluid viscosity. Thus, it ensures smooth delivery to deep fractures and prevents proppant settling.

Recommend grade: Celopro®HE100,000S

HEC Typical Application & Reference Dosage

Celopro®HE series hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is designed for different water-based fracturing and completion fluids to optimize viscosity, proppant suspension, and stability. Typical reference dosages are as follows:

  • Water-based fracturing fluids: 2–1.0%
  • Completion fluids: 1–0.5%

Note:

  1.  The above dosage ranges are for reference only. Actual usage should be adjusted based on site-specific conditions, fluid properties, and fracture design.
  2. Celotech provides testing samples or small volumes of trial orders. Contact us with your needs.

Application Case

In a shale well, high temperatures and salinity made traditional fracturing fluids thin out quickly. The proppants settle unevenly and slow down the speed of the fractures.

Our Solution: Incorporated Celopro®HE100,000S into the water-based fluid. It helped maintain proper thickness, kept proppants evenly suspended, and stayed stable under tough downhole conditions.

Result:

  • Fluid loss was reduced by 30%, protected the formation, and reduced operational costs.
  • Improved fracture conductivity and hydrocarbon flow efficiency.
