Seed Coating

Seed Coating Problems in Real Production

Many formulations “look great” in the lab testing, However, the moment they are applied in a real-world coating problems immediately shows:

Typical feedback we hear from customers:

  • Coating looks fine at first, then cracks after drying
  • Powder starts falling off during packing or transport
  • Dust becomes hard to control on-site
  • Coating thickness is uneven
  • Germination becomes inconsistent, even with good seeds

At this point, many people assume it’s a seed quality issue.

In our experience, more than half the time, the real problem is the coating system itself — not the seed

Celotech Sead Coating Solutions-System, Not a Material

We all want to try solve everything with a single binder. but stable seed coating depends on three balances:

  • Film Formation vs. Drying Speed: If drying is too fast, the film forms too quickly → becomes brittle, If too slow, coating becomes sticky and inefficient.
  • Adhesion vs. Flexibility: Strong bonding is necessary — but if the coating becomes too rigid, it cracks easily, dust-off increases during handling
  • Formula vs. Process: The same formula can behave very differently depending on: mixing method, equipment type, local climate. This is why two factories using the same materials can get completely different results.

So we need different seed coating additives to achieve balanced solutions. HPMC and CMC as film former and binders.

Tested Formulation Approach for Seed Coating

Below are common formulations in industry for you reference.

FunctionRoleRecommended ProductSuggested Celotech Series
Water RetentionPrevent early drying, ensure uniform film formationCelopro® HPMCCelopro® HHB300S/Celopro® MK50

Anti-crack & FlexibilityReduce cracking during drying and transport, absorb mechanical stressPP Fiber / Cellulose FiberCelofiber® CF

Normally, HPMC and CMC are necessary for seed coating syste, defoamer and fiber can add according to below factors:

  • Seed type
  • Equipment and processing conditions
  • Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity
  • Type of active ingredients used

We always recommend conducting small-scale trials before full production and adjusting the formulation accordingly.

Celotech Solutions Advantages

When the coating system is properly balanced, you will typically see:

  • More uniform coating distribution
  • Reduced dust during handling and planting
  • Improved resistance to transport damage
  • More consistent germination performance

And in practice, this usually means: fewer complaints from your downstream customers

Applications

Different conditions require different adjustments. There is no one-size-fits-all formula.

For Maize (Corn) Seeds: larger size and higher mechanical stress during planting

Adjustment: slightly higher binder level, use fiber reinforcement, control drying to prevent surface cracking

For Dry and Hot Regions: rapid moisture loss and coating becomes brittle

Adjustment: increase water retention (CMC), reduce drying intensity, avoid processing large batches at once

For High Humidity Conditions: Challenges: slow drying and sticky coating surface

Adjustment:balance viscosity an improve airflow rather than increasing dosage
