Calcium Formate Formulation

Calcium formate primarily acts as an early strength accelerator in cementitious materials. In real formulations, its functions are more practical:

  • Speeds up cement hydration, especially in low temperatures
  • Improves early strength (1–3 days performance)
  • Enhances workability in certain drymix systems
  • Supports faster construction cycles

From experience: In winter applications, adding calcium formate often stabilizes setting time where standard formulations become too slow.

 Calcium Formate Properties

1. Improved early strength: Calcium formate accelerates cement hydration and improves early strength;
2. Antifreeze agent: Lowers the freezing point of cement paste and reduces frost damage in cold conditions;
3. Improves durability: Reduces free water content, minimizes shrinkage and cracking, and improves impermeability and service life.

4. Compatibility with drymix systems:Calcium formate works well with:

  • Cellulose ethers (HPMC, HEC)
  • Redispersible polymer powder (RDP)
  • Other drymix additives

Practical Formulation Notes

  • Add calcium formate as a dry powder during mixing
  • Ensure uniform distribution in drymix systems
  • Test setting time under actual site conditions

Real observation: In some high-cement systems, increasing dosage too much can shorten open time more than expected, so adjustment should be gradual.

Frequently Asked Questions

You should add the calcium formate according  cement type and temperature, Normally we adhere below principles and dosage:

  • Typical dosage: 0.2% – 0.8% (by weight of cement)
  • Lower dosage → mild acceleration
  • Higher dosage → faster early strength, but must balance workability
Calcium Formate is widely used for below construction verticals:
  • Tile adhesive (CTA)
  • Cement-based plaster
  • Repair mortar
  • Self-leveling compounds
  • Concrete admixtures
Calcium formate product is currently one of the widely used quick setting agents in dry-mix mortar. It has a dual function, which not only effectively improves the early strength of mortar, allowing it to harden quickly, but also has an anti freezing effect during winter construction. Therefore, it is widely used in various types of mortar that require early strength or quick hardening characteristics. Calcium formate not only has a good promoting effect on setting, but also has no adverse effect on the later strength of mortar.
