Stargel®ST

Stargel® Hydroxypropyl Starch

The production principle of Hydroxypropyl Starch (HPS) mainly includes the following steps:

  1. Raw material preparation: Select a suitable starch source, commonly used are corn starch, potato starch, etc. Pretreatment: Mix starch with water to form a starch suspension.
  2. Hydroxypropylation reaction: React the starch suspension with a hydroxypropylating agent (such as hydroxypropyl acrylate), usually under certain temperature and pH conditions.
  3. Filtration and washing: The reaction liquid is filtered to separate the solid part, and then the solid is washed with water to remove residual reactants and impurities.
  4. Drying: Finally, the hydroxypropyl starch is dried to obtain the final product.

Under alkaline conditions, propylene oxide easily reacts with starch to form hydroxypropyl starch.
