Suspension polymerization (PVC)

Suspension polymerization (PVC)

PVC is one of the most commonly used polymers worldwide and has outstanding properties, mainly due to its ability to absorb additives such as plasticizers. In the polymerisation process, Celopro® controls the particle size and porosity which is decisive for its additive absorbing behaviour.

An important characteristic of polyvinylchloride (PVC) is its ability to absorb additives, such as plasticizers, stabilizers, pigments, and impact modifiers, quickly and in sufficient quantities. However, the required porosity level is often obtained at the expense of bulk density. Using the appropriate suspending agent during polymerization allows the producer to maintain a balance of these properties.

Recommended Solutions

Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC)

HPMC has excellent dispersing and stabilizing properties, and can adjust the particle size distribution and porosity of PVC resin. It is an important additive in PVC suspension polymerization reaction. Recommend grade: Celopro®VF, Celopro®VXF, Celopro®VE, Celopro®VXE

Why Celopro®

Celopro cellulose ethers have been used as suspending agents for vinyl chloride polymerization. These products are protective colloids made of linear polymers of condensed anhydroglucose rings that form a carbohydrate skeleton. Methyl and hydroxypropyl groups are attached to the carbohydrate skeleton via an ether linkage. Celopro cellulose ethers are nonionic, surface-active film formers.

When used as suspending agents in vinyl chloride polymerization, they provide particle size control, uniform particle size distribution, and porosity that can be optimized for many PVC end-uses. This publication discusses the use of Celopro cellulose ethers as suspending agents for vinyl chloride polymerization.

Product Features and Advantages

1. Good Dispersibility

In suspension polymerization, Celopro®cellulose ether acts as a dispersant to prevent the aggregation between early polymerization droplets and between mid- and late-stage polymer particles.

2. Good Stability

During the polymerization reaction, Celopro®cellulose ether can be adsorbed on the surface of vinyl chloride monomer droplets to form a protective film, thereby affecting the morphology of the final product.

3. Reduce interfacial tension

Celopro®cellulose ethercan reduce the interfacial tension between droplets and water and promote the dispersion of droplets, which is very important for controlling the size and morphology of PVC particles.

4. Improve plasticization performance

Celopro®Cellulose ether can affect the particle sizeand its distribution, porosity and other characteristics of resin particles. The PVC produced is easy to absorb plasticizers and plasticize.
