Hydroxypropyl Starch

Stargel® is a kind of non-ionic starch ether that is produced from special chemical treatment to starch. It’s a kind of thickener for mineral binders based on gypsum, cement or cement-lime.

Starch ether is one of the most aboundent natural polymers, and is composed of amylose and amylopectin. Amylopectin molecules are much larger than amylose. Starch ethers are chemically modified from starch.

Functions of Hydroxypropyl starch

1. Improving the performance of building products: HPS is used to optimize the performance of building materials, it can improve the adhesion of plaster, reduce settlement, provide initial strength, improve consistency, and optimize rheological properties.

2. Rapid thickening: HPS has the ability to quickly increase viscosity, especially when the degree of substitution (DS) of HPS is less than 0.5 and the dosage is 0.05%, which can promote the adhesion of plaster to the wall;

3. Strengthen tile adhesives: HPS is used to strengthen tile adhesives and prevent water loss in porous structures;

4. Improve the thickness and smoothness of cement-based formulations: Starch derivatives can improve the thickness and smoothness of cement-based formulations.

Raw starch can not dissolve in cold water, we need to heat it in hot water so that to use it for binding, pregelatinized starch is processed in advance, so that it can dissolve directly in cold water to obtain the binding property.
