Welding Rods

Welding Rods

Celopro cellulose ether is used in welding rods (also called welding electrodes) primarily as a binder and thickener in the coating that surrounds the welding rod. This coating plays a key role in ensuring the welding process is efficient and high-quality. Cellulose ether in welding rods helps enhance their strength, workability, and the quality of the welds they produce.

Recommended Solutions

Celopro® Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC) has high gel temperature can meet most requirements. The rheology of solution with HPMC can improve the quality of the coating material of  welding rods and make it more uniform.

Recommend grade: Celopro® MK30MSL; Celopro® MK50MSL

Celopro®Hydroxyethyl cellulose(HEC) has cold/hot water solubility to keep solution stable at a higher temperature, that enables the coating material to maintain good fluidity and plasticity during the drying and baking process. It can also improve the flexibility of the extruded material and he quality of the final product.

Recommend grade: Celopro® HHB30S; Celopro® HHB50S

Product Features and Advantages

  • Binder for Coating Materials: Cellulose ether helps to bind various components in the electrode coating together, such as minerals, metal powders, and other additives. This ensures that the coating stays intact and uniform around the rod, improving its performance during welding.
  • Improved Extrudability: HPMC provides better extrusion properties, making it easier to apply the coating material evenly and smoothly onto the welding rod during manufacturing.
  • Control of Moisture Content: Cellulose ether can help control moisture levels in the coating, reducing the chances of moisture absorption. This is crucial for preventing issues like porosity and cracking in the weld due to excess moisture during the welding process.
  • Enhanced Slag Formation: Cellulose ether contributes to the generation of a protective slag during welding. This slag shields the weld pool from atmospheric gases (like oxygen and nitrogen), preventing contamination and ensuring a clean, high-quality weld.
  • Thermal Stability: Cellulose ether improves the thermal stability of the electrode coating. It ensures that the coating doesn’t degrade too quickly when exposed to high temperatures during welding.
